Goals for June 2012

I have decided to come up with a few goals for June. Tomorrow (or today depending on your time zone) is June 1st. For the month of June, or longer, I plan on giving up soda, partaking in the 30 for 30 challenge, and reducing our fast food intake.

I am a self-confessed soda addict! I love it. I drink at least 2 or 3 sodas a day. I know that this is wrong. I know that it is terrible for my health and my teeth. I know that it is just empty calories and that I am just basically drinking high fructose corn syrup. Those are the reasons why I am choosing to stop drinking it. I was successful in stopping in the past, for several months actually, and then I tried to slowly add it back in my diet and quicker than I expected it was back to epic proportions!!

My friend posted this on facebook http://www.icanteachmychild.com/2012/05/30-for-30-challenge/#comment-26880. It is a challenge for the month of June to play with your kids everyday for 30 minutes. It really convicted me. I have four beautiful children and I rarely actually sit down and play with them. I do help them figure out what to play and watch them play, but rarely play with them. I remember when I was a kid, how I always loved it when my mother would play with me and give me personal attention. This is something I really want to succeed with.

Oh and now we come to fast food. Unfortunately, due to laziness and/or the failure to adequately plan meals we are regular staples at McDonald's and other fast food restaurants. My husband is well known at Little Caesar's Pizza. I think that they may even know our regular order. I want to start cooking healthy meals at home with my family. It makes me feel so wonderful when I sit down at our table to a home cooked meal that I prepared for my family.

Do you have any goals for the month of June? Please share in the comments! :)

  1. Those are great goals!! I think I will join you in the 30 for 30 although it scares me. I know that's weird to say but it does. :) I also need to start meal planning again. And I think my third goal will be to get up early and do my devotions in the morning.

    1. Meal planning is definitely something we need to start doing! I understand how the 30 for 30 can be scary but I think once we get started it will flow naturally. We can start off with a board game or just playing around outside or whatever. Just some activity together that isn't grownup lead, if you know what I mean.

  2. One thing that helps me cook more often is that I started a freezer meal exchange with friends in November. Find 5-10 friends (my group is at 7 right now.) You each pick one meal to make, and make enough for each member of the group. Then you pick a day to meet and exchange. I do a lot of chicken crockpot meals, that require no pre-cooking and very little prep time. Also, I'm a member of a recipe exchange on Facebook that I can add you to if you want.

    1. Jessica that would be great! I've thought about getting together with a few friends and doing a cooking day or something like that. It is just so hard to do that right now with a newborn.

  3. Those are great goals!! I have some similar ones this month, myself, that involve healthier habits and spending time with my son now that we are done with homeschooling for the year. Good luck with giving up soda! I remember giving up sweet tea (because of the caffeine). I can't bring it home, but I do let myself have it at restaurants. And for our family, it's nor Little Caesar's, but Papa John's :), so I am also working on doing more and better meal planning.

    1. My husband loves Papa John's Jeanine, but Praise the Lord that we do not have one in town. :) I figure eventually I will go back to having soda when we eat out, as long as that is few and far between.

  4. Great goals!! I gave up soda for Lent this year and have not looked back. I had two ginger ale for an upset tummy and found them soooo sweet. Once you are off for a while you will feel so much better. I even have lost 10 pounds since I quit. :)

  5. Such inspiring goals for the month! I especially like the idea of playing with your children for 30 minutes a day. Because I homeschool my daughters, I feel like I spend a lot of time with them each day, but that's teaching/learning...not playing. There's a huge difference. Thanks for the reminder about the importance of play. I need to make a more dedicated effort to playing...not just teaching. :)

  7. You can give up the pop! I know, because I did! It's hard to not drink that next can of Dr. Pepper or whatever your preference is, but it's do-able!

I like the 30 in 30 challenge you mentioned. My kiddos are teens and I need to get them out of the house this summer. Maybe a walk at the park or some basketball with their dad.

    1. Thank you so much for the encouragment, Tami!! I've had a little setback, but I haven't drank nearly as much as normal, so I am still counting it as a victory!

  8. Hi, I am your newest follower. I love your goals for the month. I am not personally a big soda drinker but my husband is an absolute diet coke addict. He knows it. It is so bad, even the diet stuff, I sure wish he would have your goal and stop or at least cut down. As far as meal planning, that is a challenge I share. I am sometimes good at planning meals, then get tired of it and don't want to eat what is planned so we just wing it. One good source for food planning and also great recipes is The Food Nanny at http://thefoodnanny.org/. She also has a very interesting TV show...one of my favorite recipe shows. I am following you now and will look forward to more of your posts.
